The British electorate overwhelmingly voted to retain first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting system in 2011 and I strongly believe this was the right decision. FPTP is decisive; it gives voters the chance to eject governments they are fed up with. It is also simple and clear. The candidate who gets the most votes wins. This means it is cheaper to administer and comes with little bureaucracy.
Our current electoral system is one of this country’s biggest exports, used by half the voters in the world. We’ve had that debate and the British public has settled the question. However, this Government does intend to press ahead with boundary reform, which I believe will improve the situation.
