During a weeklong tour of China, the Chancellor announced new funding to provide training for over 5,000 new football coaches, significantly increasing Chinese awareness of the thriving football sector in this country.
Football is vitally important to the British economy and I welcome this attempt to raise the profile of the English game. Further, I am delighted that during the last three seasons, the Premier League contributed £3bn to the Treasury in addition to £270m it provides to football organisations.
This announcement follows a new agreement between the British and Chinese governments to work together in developing sports education including new collaborations on sports policy, the training of coaches and referees and a new joint accreditation in football coaching for PE teachers.
