Nuclear has an important role to play as part of Britain’s energy mix. The Nuclear Industrial Strategy published in 2013 in partnership with industry establishes a long term approach for the sector to stimulate economic growth and create jobs in this country. Clearly, renewables are also very important, but by 2030, we will need to get around 35 per cent of our increasing energy requirements from nuclear, so it is not easily dismissed.
This would also reduce our carbon emissions by 40 million tonnes, bring £89 billion of private investment into our economy and create around 35,000 jobs at the peak of construction. It will provide a clean source of home-grown energy, powering nearly six million homes and reducing energy bills for households.
