Let me begin by making it clear that, although I campaigned for Britain to remain in the EU, I accept the democratic decision of the British people. Turnout for the referendum was larger than at any election since 1992 and no Prime Minister or party in British history has ever received as many votes as the vote to leave did. So the Government has a duty to deliver the referendum result and it will do so in the national interest.
Regarding a second referendum on this country’s membership of the European Union, I do not believe there will be, or should be, any attempts to remain inside the EU, nor to re-join it and no second referendum. The country voted to leave the EU and it is the duty of the Government to make sure we do just that.
The withdrawal negotiations have begun and the Government has made it clear that it will seek a withdrawal agreement that works for everyone. This agreement will be put to Parliament before it is concluded.
