Former Deputy Leader of Derbyshire County Council Simon Spencer became an Honorary Alderman at County Hall yesterday, marking the culmination of a distinguished and influential career in local government.
Derbyshire Dales Conservatives would like to place on record its thanks to Simon for his incredible service to the residents he served and for his outstanding dedication to the Party, Association, and Derbyshire as a whole.
Simon represented the Dovedale division on Derbyshire County Council from 2009 until standing down at the 2025 elections. During this time, he not only served as the Deputy Leader of the Council but also played a pivotal role in shaping major policies and driving forward key strategic initiatives.
His career in local politics spans nearly three decades, beginning with his service on Ashbourne Town Council and Derbyshire Dales District Council before progressing to senior leadership roles at County Hall. Across these authorities, Simon held significant cabinet responsibilities, led important service areas, and made substantial contributions to financial oversight, corporate governance, and infrastructure planning. His long-standing commitment to public service earned him respect across the political spectrum.
Commenting on receiving this title, Simon said “I was humbled and immensely proud to become an Honorary Alderman of Derbyshire. It has been a privilege to serve the residents of Ashbourne and Dovdedale over many years and I would like to thank everyone for their work”.
Chairman of Derbyshire Dales Conservative Association, Cllr Dermot Murphy, also added “It’s excellent news that Simon has received this title which is well deserved. He has been a great councillor who was able to achieve so much at every level of local government.”
“He’s an inspiration to his colleagues”.
Derbyshire Dales Conservatives would also like to congratulate former Leader of the Council Barry Lewis (pictured with Simon) and former councillor Robert Parkinson on also receiving Alderman status. Their recognition, alongside Simon’s, reflects decades of commitment, leadership, and service to communities across Derbyshire.
