Derbyshire Dales Conservatives are calling on Derbyshire Dales District Council to ensure that its ban on illegal barbecues and open fires is backed up by proper enforcement across the district.
Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) give the Council powers to tackle barbecues and open fires in protected areas, helping to reduce the risk of devastating wildfires on our moors and other vulnerable countryside.
We welcome the increased focus on enforcement this year, including targeted patrols and partnership working with the Police, Peak District National Park Authority and other agencies. But these patrols must result in action where breaches are identified.
With recent dry summer weather increasing the risk of wildfires, the District Council must ensure sufficient enforcement officers are available, particularly at known hotspots and during periods of heightened risk.
Commenting on the recent enforcement, Conservative Group Leader on Derbyshire Dales District Council, Cllr Stuart Lees, said "I welcome more enforcement as long as it is meaningful. As a former firefighter, I know first hand the devastation people's recklessness can cause. We've seen the ruination of the moors that our neighbours in the High Peak have been battling lately."
Cllr Susan Hobson, who has constantly raised this at District Council for many years, feels action has been far too slow to this ever-increasing threat. Cllr Hobson added "Education and clear signage are important, but they must be backed up by visible enforcement. Those who recklessly put our countryside, wildlife and communities at risk by ignoring the ban should expect the Council to use the powers available to it. We welcome visitors but we need visitors to be sensible, to ensure the beauty of our area is protected for generations to come."
Local Conservatives are also calling on the Liberal Democrat-led Disitrict Council to ensure people cannot buy disposable barbecues in our area.
The Peak District National Park has for many years worked with retailers in its area to encourage the voluntary withdrawal of disposable barbecues from sale, and we welcome those businesses that have taken this responsible step.
The District Council should build on this approach by proactively working with retailers and supermarkets across the Derbyshire Dales to discourage the sale of disposable barbecues and ensure customers are clearly warned about where their use is prohibited.
