The purpose the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill is to minimise disruption and provide as much certainty as possible by providing the UK with a functioning statute book after the UK leaves the EU. It will repeal the European Communities Act 1972, transpose EU law to British law, and give Parliament time-limited powers to correct any technical deficiencies.
The Prime Minister has repeatedly promised that workers’ rights, environmental safeguards and consumer protection will be fully guaranteed and this Bill provides the means for doing so. It does not provide for the removal of these rights in anyway and does not provide Ministers with the power to make major policy changes.
